Wii Loop Software

Geeks score again.  This guy built some homebrew software to control his samples on the Mac with a Wiimote.  Damn skippy.  I can’t find a way to embed the video, so you’ll have to click through the link.  That’s how we got content back in my day.  And we liked it!

Dylan/Suess Brilliance

The site is down as I type, but check dylanhearsawho.com for a great batch of Suessian lyrics preformed in the style of a mid sixties nasaly Bob Dylan. Dr. Suess was quite an interesting guy, check out the wikipedia entry for some fun trivia. Did you know that he is credited with created the word “nerd”?

Cabin Fever ’07 Part One

We saw two YMSB shows back to back a couple of weeks ago. What, you forgot? I totally told you a month ago, you douche. That, combined with the sickly amounts of time I’ve been spending with my Wii, is why I’ve not been posting recently.

Thursday saw our return to southern Ohio (So-Hi-O?) for a night at our beloved Madison Theater. We met up with our friends Patrick and Jennifer at the hotel I booked online. Bang up job, me. The place was a real shithole. Oh well, live and learn, right? Anyhow, we hooked up with some friends from Cincinnati and headed off to drink before the doors opened. Patrick and Jennifer do Video taping at most YMSB shows, and this was no exception. They stayed behind to clean up and get to the venue ASAP to set up their rigs. We meandered to a British-style pub, where vast amounts of stout and fish (sans chip, for some reason…) were consumed. Feeling good, we made our way to the Madison.

Things were a little weird, as some d-bag had decided that the stage was meant for them the night before in Knoxville. There was a very serious looking barricade set up in front of the stage, something that came at the request of the band. The show started strong with Picture in a Tear, and the place started hopping after that. About halfway through the show, we could tell that something odd was happening. We were up in the balcony area, and started hearing reports that it was being closed off to any more traffic. Fortunately, there’s a bar there, but no where to have a cigarette. Long story shortened, we think they may have oversold a little bit. The wife and I are senitive to overcrowding, but the balcony stayed perfect. We had a nice little section for us and our dozen or so friends, with plenty of room to boogie. If only they had turned on the upside down dance floor (you’d have to see it for yourself, I guess…). Here’s the breakdown:

02/22/07 Madison Theater, Covington, KY
Set I: Picture In A Tear, Southbound, Crooked Hitch, Near Me, New Horizons> Good Hearted Woman> New Horizons, If I Lose, Loneliness & Desperation, Damned If The Right One Didn’t Go Wrong, If There’s Still Ramblin’ in the Rambler (let him go)> Mother’s Only Son> If There’s Still Ramblin’ in the Rambler (let him go)
Set II: Rambler’s Anthem, Kentucky Mandolin, Darkness and Light, Keep on Going> Angel> Keep on Going, Finally Saw The Light, Steam Powered Aereoplane, What You’re Selling, Fastball> Years With Rose> Boatman> Goodbye Blue Sky
Encore: Dominated Love Slave, Hit Parade Of Love

Rambler->MOS->Rambler was tight, Angel sounded like the country anthem I’m worried it will become, and Dominated Love Slave was one that I had never caught live, so I was stoked.

Studio 35 Drama

There’s been a lot of talk in the few weeks since a mess of Studio 35 employees walked out.  I’ve spoken with love about the place before, but it’s been about a month since we’ve been there.  The twin monsters of alternative paper have their takes here and here.  Here’s my love it hate it list, as if someone cares.

Loves it:

  1. Beer.  Delicious, delicious beer.  Hosters, Great Lakes, Rogue and more.  (P.S. start carrying some Dogfish Head and I’ll be there 24/7!)
  2. My favorite employee (Ben?  Something like that, I always forget his name and am now too embarrassed to ask) talking Lost-talk with me as I order said beer.
  3. I can count on one movie a month that interests me, be it mainstream or indie/art-house.
  4. It’s cheap.
  5. Clintonville Pizza in da house.
  6. Ms. Pac-Man.
  7. It’s right across the street.  Seriously.  Right over there.

Not so much:

  1. You’re showing what, when?  I never know in advance what’s going to be showing over the weekend.  So I make plans, then S35 shows something awesome.  But I can’t go.  And like that…they’re gone.
  2.  It sounds really bad in there.  Like, laptop speaker bad.
  3. Ummm…

Yeah, that’s about it.  I really do love the place and will make a more concerted effort to support them when I can.  It looks like they’re fixing up the sound, so I’ll drop that complaint soon enough.  It can’t be that hard to give us some advance notice of whats going to be playing when, just get on the ball, K?

As far as the walkout stands, I’m not there nor do I know anyone that is/was.  It seemed like a cool enough place to work, but I’ll never know.  I find it hard to believe that the owners would be stealing tips.  That’s kind of petty for people that can afford to buy a theater and all.  But I know a thing or two about treating your people right, and it’s pretty hard to reconcile those things once you’ve fucked them all up.  I wish both parties all the best, and I hope that everyone gets what they need/deserve/have coming to them.
